Masquerade 1: Being Monsters
Coloured and graphite pencil, 21.5 x 10.5 inches, 2007.
This is something of an expansion of the 'Party Faces' I did for Bridgwater Arts Centre's exhibition in 2006. Scroll down to see a close-up.
'Masquerade 1: being monsters' - drawing by Nancy Farmer.
There's something quite scary about people in masks - it's the way you have no idea of the expression behind the mask, and when you add an expression onto the mask itself there's a double confusion. This picture started off as an image all on its own, but before I finished it I found that it needed a companion piece - another 'Masquerade' only this time there wouldn't be people dressing up as fantastic monsters, but monsters (well, demons, to be precise) trying to look like people. After all, why shouldn't demons have a masked ball, too? Click the thumbnail to the left to see 'Masquerade 2: being people'.
