This is a surprisingly dark and disturbing picture, considering it wasn't planned that way. It followed another painting I did - 'Hatchlings' - which had fairies hatching out of chrysalises, like butterflies do (click thumbnail to the left to see that). The reasoning went like this: If fairies (which have butterfly-type wings) hatch like butterflies do, then angels might hatch like birds do. But somehow it all got a bit dark and nasty, and the poor angels look rather abandoned and more than a little demented, whereas 'Hatchlings', which was actually supposed to be a little disturbing, is actually quite serene. Sometimes a painting just develops and it will, and it's probably best just to let it have its way...
