Party Animals

Artwork details: etching, edition of 18 prints, 15.2 x 4.6 inches (39 x 12 cm), 2010.

There is something of a (restrained) Bacchanal going on here. I was, in fact, thinking of calling it 'Maenads Behaving Badly' - the Maenads being the female followers of Dionysus, the Ancient Greek god of, well, more or less of getting a bit carried away, and of wine, too, and the Greek equivalent of the Roman Bacchus, though better looking. However, to be honest if these are Maenads they are actually behaving rather well for Maenads (read the Bacchae by Euripides if you want proof - it has a rather nasty ending). So, in the end I settled for 'Party Animals', with the hairy presence of the Satyrs rather appropriate and a nice pun. Party Animals - etching print by Nancy Farmer
