Mayflies

Gouache, coloured pencil, 26.5 x 16.5 inches, 2005.

This was inspired by those insects such as mayflies who live out their lives as crawling things at the bottom of ponds - and only emerge as winged adults in the last days of their lives.

It always seemed a shame, and rather a waste of effort - still, at least they get to fly for one day, which is more than we get!
