3² Pythagorean Ladies
Artwork details: etching, edition of 9 prints, 15.2 x 4.7 inches (39 x 12 cm), 2011.
The title of this composition (in case of mishap in the display) is not '32 Pythagorean Ladies', it is 'Three Squared Pythagorean Ladies' - the geometrical connection growing out of a previous etching I had done in which three nudes were squeezed into a tiny little space and became somewhat geometrical in the way in which they folded together. I thought I'd make a virtue out of a necessity, and push the mathematical connections, and if you look closely you will see that not only are they somewhat angular in their arrangement, their limbs trace a number of (more or less) right-angled triangles. I have not counted the number of triangles, you may do so, if you wish...
Another idea with a mathematical connection, more punning this time, was 'Fermat's Last Hareem', but I cannot for the present imagine what that might look like.
Prints of this etching are in more limited numbers than I usually make on account, unfortunately, of a rather too shallowly etched plate: I succeeded in printing only 9 of this, and that with some trouble, so this one is rarer than most of my etchings.
